Do I Need a Zoned Home?

A zoned heating and cooling system splits your home into two (or more) zones which are set by an individual thermostat. Are some areas in your home more comfy than others? Do you have hot and cold spots? There are a number of factors that can play into this, but a zoned home comfort system just may be the one fix you need. Zoning will not only keep you more comfortable, but when paired with programmable thermostats, it may also help you save on your heating and cooling costs.

How Does It Work?

After the zones of your home have been mapped out, zoned heating and cooling runs by using dampers that are installed into your ductwork. These dampers control air flow throughout your home. Each zone of your home has its own thermostat installed to ensure you can modify and control your comfort. All of the individual thermostats are linked to a control panel that operates your HVAC system.

Is A Zoned Home Right for Me?

A simple way to think through the importance of zoning is to imagine you controlled all the lights of your home with a single switch. That would be incredibly inefficient and impractical. The same is true for having one thermostat taking care of your entire home. With a zoned heating and cooling system you have control of every zone of your home. Zones are normally mapped out by identifying the areas in the home that have similar heating and cooling needs.

Even in homes that are correctly insulated and constructed well can be uncomfortable from hot and cold spots. Some common architectural features that lead to this are multiple stories, large windows and vaulted ceilings. As we all learned in science class, heat rises. That means that your top floors are likely to be warmer than lower levels. It only makes sense to have an individual thermostat for different levels of your home. Zoned homes can also be tailored to your family’s personal comfort desires.

A zoned home will not only save you on bills, but it can keep you and your family more comfortable.
