Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Home

July 10, 2020

When it’s a warm summer day in Mount Pleasant, nothing feels worse than figuring out your cooling system isn’t functioning the way it is meant to. The last thing you want to do is call for air conditioner help. But your air conditioner is a quite involved system, so it can be challenging to discover what’s creating the problem without training.

That’s why Olde Towne Heating & Air wrote this handbook to help you understand what may be going on with your air conditioner. Below, you’ll see a couple prevailing explanations for why your place is feeling a little too warm. And though a few of these are straightforward DIY projects, you might have to call in a pro for home comfort system repair.

And if that’s the case, Olde Towne Heating & Air is prepared to take care of your home. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your residence in Mount Pleasant.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Could Be Off

Every home uses their thermostat a touch differently to work with their individual requirements. Nevertheless, many people make the misstep of setting their thermostat to “On” rather than “Auto.” Because of this setting, the fan in your system will continue to produce an air current even when you’ve achieved your set temperature.

This can look like your air conditioner distributing warmish air, when actually it’s simply using the fan on a more regular basis than necessary. Try switching this setting and work out if things change.

2. Your HVAC Needs Some Cleaning

There are two principal spaces to inspect for dirt or dust buildup when your HVAC doesn’t appear to be working right.

First, take a look at your HVAC filter. If you don’t switch out your filter regularly, buildup can make it more difficult for air to flow through and cool down your space. If your filter is visibly dirty or dusty, it’s more than likely time for a substitute. (And in general, you have to change it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter is looking fine, go to your outdoor unit. Double check there’s a couple of feet of space around your air conditioner and sweep away plants or dirt around it. This part of your home comfort system releases the heat from within your space. If the coils outside are blocked, you won’t be feeling cool inside.

We recommend booking professional air conditioner maintenance yearly to keep your system working smoothly and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your AC is Leaking Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the material that cools down the air in your house. It cycles between your inside and external units to absorb and release heat, to help your house keep cool. If there is a crack along that system, you won’t be cool again until you book professional air conditioning repair.

Signals of a refrigerant leak include a lack of chilled air, climbing electric bills, frozen evaporator coils and odd hissing noises arising from your AC.

If you think refrigerant might be leaking, call Olde Towne Heating & Air for HVAC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be damaging to your family’s health.

4. One or More Elements Have to Be Replaced

Your AC contains a a handful of key pieces. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one of these is failing, your home comfort declines.

Our Olde Towne Heating & Air pros are certified and experienced in HVAC. They can help you locate and repair any problem.

5. Your System Needs to Be Replaced

If your air conditioner is older than 10 years old, it may be time to consider new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it simply won’t operate as well as it has in the past. And it might be making your home feel unpleasant.

If your AC is more current but still isn’t cooling things off, it could be too small for your space. Air conditioners are not all the same. A system that’s not big enough just can’t chill a space the way a correctly sized AC can.
